What to do when Windows warns about the installer, Orbit Browser does not finish downloading, a proxy test fails or a profile will not open, and where profile data lives.

Guide · 1 min read

SmartScreen warns on first run

SmartScreen warns about programs it has not seen widely before, with a screen titled Windows protected your PC. That reflects how far a file has spread, not what is in it. Choose More info, then Run anyway.

Orbit Browser did not finish downloading

If you were offline or the download stopped, the Updating Orbit Browser… window closes and opening a profile reports That browser is not installed yet. Check your connection, then choose Retry in the Activity panel or restart PowerOps. Either one fetches the browser again before anything opens.

Recover from a browser download that stopped

A proxy test fails

Check the endpoint first. Host, port and protocol have to match what the provider issued. Then check the credentials, since an expired password fails exactly like a dead endpoint. If both are right and the test still fails, the route itself is down and the provider is the next call. Hover over Failed on the Proxies page to read the reason PowerOps recorded.

What each proxy failure means and how to clear it

A profile will not open on this machine

A synced profile can be held by another device through the single-holder lease. Close the profile on the device that holds it, let the close capture its state, and this machine can take the lease. Profiles that are not synced are local and open without a lease.

Where profile data lives on disk

PowerOps keeps everything it writes in %LOCALAPPDATA%\PowerOps, which is also where the installer puts the application unless you choose another folder. Each workspace's profiles, each profile's own browser directory and the Orbit Browser it fetched all live there. Uninstalling removes the application and the browser but leaves your profiles, so delete the folder yourself if you want them gone.

Try it on your own computer

PowerOps is a Windows download. Install it, sign in with your ArticleOps account, and the getting started guide takes you from there to your first open profile.
